ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) has been awarded the prestigious GreenPro Ecolabel certification for its coated steel products—Galvanized Iron (GI), Pre-Painted Galvanized Iron (PPGI), and Optigal® steel—manufactured at its Pune facility. This recognition, granted by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) after a rigorous evaluation, underscores the company’s commitment to sustainable steel manufacturing.
The GreenPro Ecolabel, a globally recognized ‘Type I Ecolabel,’ was introduced by CII to promote responsible consumption and production across industries in India. Recognized by the Global Ecolabelling Network (GEN), the certification follows a lifecycle-based, multi-criteria assessment model aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12, which advocates for sustainable production and consumption practices.
Akshaya Gujral, Executive Director (Downstream Operations) at AM/NS India, stated, “This certification highlights our leadership in lower-carbon steel manufacturing. It reaffirms our commitment to sustainability, innovation, and circular economy principles.” The company ensures that over 21% of raw materials used in production are sustainable, with 99% sourced regionally to minimize transportation-related emissions. Additionally, hazardous substances, including heavy metals, are restricted to maintain a safer and cleaner manufacturing process.
AM/NS India’s Pune facility integrates energy and water efficiency with advanced waste management practices, adhering to the 3R principles—reduce, reuse, and recycle. With a zero-liquid discharge system in place, the facility significantly lowers the carbon footprint of its coated steel products. The performance of these products has been verified by CEPT Research & Development Foundation, Ahmedabad, streamlining the due diligence process for customers seeking sustainable and high-performance materials.
The GreenPro Ecolabel certification evaluates products across their entire lifecycle, from design and raw material sourcing to manufacturing and waste management. By adopting these standards, AM/NS India reinforces its commitment to sustainable steel production while supporting industry-wide efforts to reduce environmental impact.
