BKT Tyres Accelerates India’s Growth with Innovation and Sustainability

Balkrishna Industries Limited (BKT Tyres) is advancing India’s Viksit Bharat vision through high-performance off-highway tyre solutions across agriculture, mining, and infrastructure. Its focus on innovation, vertical integration, and sustainable manufacturing enhances productivity, lowers environmental impact, and reinforces India’s position as a competitive global manufacturing and mobility hub.

How is Balkrishna Industries Limited contributing to India’s vision of Viksit Bharat through innovation in off-highway tyre technologies for agriculture, mining, and infrastructure sectors?

BKT Tyres is firmly committed to the Make in India vision, for India and for the world.  We have established four world-class manufacturing facilities in India that supply tyres to more than 163 countries. Our plants are designed to meet global standards in technology, automation, and sustainability, enabling us to supply high-quality tyres to both domestic and international markets. India remains our strategic manufacturing hub, with products exported worldwide across construction, mining, material handling and industrial segments.

Our innovation-driven approach ensures that agricultural, mining, and construction machinery operate under demanding conditions. By developing specialised tyres with superior traction, durability, and load-bearing capabilities, we empower our customers to maximize output while reducing downtime and operating costs.

India’s infrastructure push is accelerating demand for construction and earthmoving equipment. How are advanced tyre solutions supporting productivity and durability in these demanding applications?

Innovation lies at the heart of BKT Tyres’s product development, guiding every aspect of our design and manufacturing process. Our tyres integrate advanced technologies to ensure superior performance and extended service life. Our radial tyre range, in particular, is engineered to deliver uniform wear and enhanced heat dissipation, factors that collectively minimize downtime and extends equipment longevity. Additionally, we continue to invest in tyre testing and technologies, enabling operators to prevent unplanned interruptions.

What truly differentiates BKT Tyres is our strong foundation of vertical integration, which gives us complete control over quality, and innovation at every stage of production. From in-house carbon black manufacturing to our mold and drum production units and state-of-the-art R&D facilities, this integrated ecosystem allows us to achieve consistency, efficiency, and faster innovation cycles.

This end-to-end integration not only ensures that we maintain stringent quality standards but also enables us to innovate swiftly in response to market needs. From raw material formulation to the finished tyre, every step is driven by precision engineering and sustainability, resulting in products that consistently deliver reliability, and long-term value for our customers.

What initiatives is BKT taking to reduce carbon emissions, optimise energy use, and promote circular manufacturing practices for sustainability?

Sustainability is at the core of BKT Tyres long-term strategy, inspiring innovation across both our products and manufacturing processes. Through ongoing R&D, we are steadily increasing the use of renewable materials and replacing petrochemical components in our tyres with sustainable alternatives.

In FY 2024-25, 32% of our raw materials are renewable. Alongside these material innovations, we have enhanced resource efficiency, increased renewable energy usage, recycled over 98% of process waste, and reduced dependence on non-renewable energy sources. This integrated approach allows us to innovate more rapidly and deliver products that align with our vision.

By harnessing renewable energy, optimizing production processes, and developing sustainable materials, we minimize our environmental footprint while maintaining the uncompromised quality, reliability, and efficiency that define every BKT Tyres product, ensuring long-term value for our customers and the planet.

With India emerging as a global manufacturing hub, how does BKT leverage its R&D and production capabilities to compete in international markets?

BKT Tyres operate state-of-the-art facilities in Waluj, Bhiwadi, Chopanki, and Bhuj, with Bhuj serving as our flagship plant. Our plants are built to global standards, allowing us to consistently deliver high-quality products across markets. At the same time, we are enhancing our capabilities with additional machinery and advanced systems to support our growing on-highway segment, reflecting our forward-looking approach to mobility.

We continue to invest in capacity expansion, green energy, automation, and product diversification to meet rising global demand. Our strong export performance, recognised by AIRIA for 2024–25, reinforces our presence in over 163 countries. With this combination of advanced manufacturing, deep R&D, and vertical integration, India remains our strategic hub as we scale globally and deliver consistent value across construction, mining, material handling, and industrial segments.

What role do partnerships with OEMs, equipment manufacturers, and farmers play in shaping the next generation of tyres for agriculture and heavy industries?

Every product under BKT Tyres is developed with a deep understanding of field challenges, resulting in products that contribute directly to operational efficiency and cost savings for our customers.

Co-creation is central to our innovation approach; guided by our ‘Growing Together’ philosophy, we work closely with OEM partners to design tyres tailored to specific machinery and applications. For us, tyres are not just components, they are performance enablers that empower our customers to achieve higher productivity and reduced total cost of ownership. This approach helps us in not only meeting the current demands but also anticipating future requirements, ultimately driving productivity, safety, and operational efficiency across industries.

We are also enhancing dealer networks and after-sales support to help contractors and fleet operators reduce total cost of ownership, ensuring it captures both immediate and long-term growth opportunities.

As India moves toward sustainable mobility and infrastructure development, how is BKT innovating with alternative materials and advanced compounds in tyre manufacturing?

At BKT Tyres, we continuously optimise our manufacturing processes to reduce waste, improve efficiency, and operate more sustainably. Carbon black is a critical raw material, making up nearly 30% of a tyre’s composition. To ensure a stable, high-quality supply, BKT established its own carbon black manufacturing facility at our flagship plant in Bhuj. Our in-house product, BKT Carbon supports internal production and is also supplied to the market. The plant also operates as a zero-liquid-discharge facility with complete water recycling, while ongoing initiatives in reclaimed rubber, recycled steel, and reused feedstock further reinforce our commitment to circularity.

The integration of tyre and carbon black production at our Bhuj plant strengthens sustainability, operational efficiency, and supply chain reliability. A pneumatic transfer system has replaced bulk bags, eliminating nearly 100,000 bags per year, reducing energy use by up to 70%, and cutting over two million kilograms of CO2 annually, all while enhancing automation and worker safety.

Together, these integrated practices demonstrate how responsible manufacturing and vertical integration deliver performance, lower production emissions in OTR tyre manufacturing and brings long-term environmental value.

Looking ahead to the next decade, what opportunities do you see for Indian tyre manufacturers in supporting global infrastructure growth and strengthening India’s position in the global supply chain?

The coming years present significant opportunities for tyre manufacturers, driven by accelerating global infrastructure development and increasing demand for high-performance mobility solutions. The OTR tyre market is experiencing strong growth driven by large-scale national development projects and rising equipment demand. Government-led investments in highways, smart cities, and rural development continue to create significant demand for high-performance OTR tyres.

At BKT Tyres, this opportunity is not limited to off-highway segments alone. Our recent entry into the on-highway tyre market in India marks a strategic expansion of our mobility footprint, enabling us to cater to both infrastructure-led demand and the fast-growing consumer and commercial vehicle segments. This move reflects our long-term vision to evolve into a fully integrated mobility solutions provider. With investments of INR 3,500 crore to strengthen manufacturing, R&D, carbon black integration, and distribution, alongside our Vision 2030 roadmap to achieve INR 23,000 crore in revenue, we are building scale with discipline. By combining our global OHT leadership with a strong India-led on-highway strategy, we are well positioned to support both domestic growth and global demand, further reinforcing India’s role as a key hub in the global tyre and mobility value chain.
