Building an Integrated Foundation for India’s Growth
From its beginning as a single-product manufacturer, MSP Steel & Power has evolved into a fully integrated steel and power company with a strong presence in India’s infrastructure ecosystem. Through strategic expansion, operational excellence and sustainable practices, the company continues to strengthen its role in supporting the nation’s industrial and construction growth. – Saket Agrawal, Managing Director, MSP Steel & Power Ltd
MSP Steel & Power has evolved from a single-product manufacturer into an integrated steel and power company. What have been the most significant milestones in this journey?
MSP Steel’s growth has been driven by a clear strategy of backward and forward integration at a single location in Raigarh, Chhattisgarh. Over the years, we have built an integrated value chain spanning pelletisation, coal washing, sponge iron, steelmaking, rolling mills, captive power generation and logistics infrastructure. A key milestone was being among the early adopters of pelletisation technology in the region, enabling efficient utilisation of iron ore fines. We also pioneered direct hot billet charging into rolling mills, improving energy efficiency and productivity. Our dedicated railway siding has further strengthened supply chain reliability and operational efficiency.
How is the company positioning itself to benefit from India’s growing infrastructure and construction demand for steel products?
India’s infrastructure growth story presents a significant opportunity for MSP Steel. What differentiates us is our ability to offer a comprehensive range of steel products required across the infrastructure value chain, including Premium grade TMT Bars, light and heavy structural sections and Pipes. This enables us to participate in a wide range of projects spanning highways, railways, industrial facilities, warehousing, commercial construction and urban infrastructure. Our centrally located manufacturing facility in Chhattisgarh provides logistical advantages in servicing multiple markets across India. In addition, our products have been approved and supplied for various infrastructure projects, including those associated with NHAI, Railways, MES and state government agencies, strengthening our position as a trusted partner in India’s development journey.
What role does vertical integration—from sponge iron and pellets to finished steel products and power generation—play in MSP Steel’s business strategy?
Vertical integration is a core pillar of our business model. It provides greater control over costs, quality and supply chain risks while enhancing operational flexibility. By managing the value chain from raw materials to finished products, we can maintain consistent product quality and optimise efficiencies at every stage. Our captive power generation, including waste heat recovery, further improves energy efficiency and reduces dependence on external power sources. The integrated setup also enables us to offer a comprehensive basket of steel products to our customers from a single manufacturing location.

What initiatives is MSP Steel undertaking to improve operational efficiency and environmental performance?
Sustainability and efficiency go hand in hand at MSP. We continue to invest in renewable energy solutions, including solar installations, while maximising the use of waste heat recovery systems and coal washery rejects for power generation. Fly ash generated from our operations is utilised for manufacturing bricks and paver blocks, supporting circular economy principles. We are also upgrading furnaces, turbines and process equipment to improve energy efficiency and throughput. Continuous innovation and operational excellence remain key focus areas across our manufacturing facilities.
How are changing raw material costs and market cycles influencing the company’s planning and investment decisions?
The steel industry operates in a dynamic raw material environment, making flexibility critical. Increasing domestic coal availability has strengthened the business case for investments in coal washing facilities. Similarly, fluctuations in iron ore quality and pricing have accelerated investments in beneficiation and pelletisation to maximise utilisation of lower-grade iron ore fines. We continuously optimise our raw material mix and production processes, including the use of imported coal when economically viable, to remain competitive across market cycles.
Which segments are currently driving the strongest demand for the company’s products?
Government-led infrastructure development continues to be the strongest demand driver, particularly in railways, highways, bridges, urban infrastructure and industrial corridors. Demand is also growing from private sector investments in manufacturing, logistics parks, warehouses and industrial construction. MSP is uniquely positioned to serve these sectors through its diversified portfolio of Premium grade TMT Bars, Structural steel sections and Pipes, allowing us to participate in projects from foundation to superstructure. This broad product offering enables us to benefit from multiple growth segments within India’s infrastructure and industrial expansion.
What are the company’s key priorities for capacity expansion, technology adoption and product diversification over the next few years?
Our growth strategy is centred on brownfield expansion at our existing integrated facility, allowing us to leverage existing infrastructure and achieve lower capital costs per tonne of additional capacity. We are focused on debottlenecking operations, improving capacity utilisation and adopting energy-efficient technologies that enhance productivity and reduce environmental impact. Product diversification will continue to be aligned with customer requirements and market opportunities, while leveraging our existing manufacturing ecosystem.
Looking ahead, how does MSP Steel & Power envision its role in supporting India’s industrial growth and manufacturing industry?
India’s aspiration to become a global manufacturing and infrastructure powerhouse will require reliable, high-quality and sustainably produced steel. MSP Steel aims to play a meaningful role in this transformation by providing a comprehensive portfolio of products including Premium grade TMT Bars, heavy and light Structural steel sections and Pipes that are essential for building the nation’s roads, railways, industrial facilities, energy infrastructure and urban development projects. Backed by an integrated manufacturing platform, continuous investments in technology and operational excellence, MSP is committed to supporting India’s infrastructure growth while creating a more efficient, sustainable and globally competitive steel entity.
