LiuGong India driving the Next Generation of Construction Equipment

India’s construction equipment sector is entering a new phase, driven by infrastructure expansion, technology adoption and growing demand for efficient, reliable machinery. In this interaction, Nischal Mehrotra, Sr. Vice President, LiuGong India, discusses product innovation, digitalisation, electrification, customer support and the company’s strategy for India’s evolving equipment market.

India’s construction equipment industry is driven by large-scale infrastructure investments. How is LiuGong aligning its product and business strategy to capitalise on these opportunities?

India’s infrastructure development is creating demand for equipment that can deliver higher productivity, reliability and consistent uptime across demanding applications. Our focus is on offering solutions that are aligned with these requirements while considering operating efficiency and total cost of ownership. We also recognise that different projects require different equipment capabilities, so application suitability remains important. Alongside products, customer support, parts availability and service responsiveness are critical to the overall equipment proposition. Our objective is to remain closely aligned with evolving customer needs as India’s infrastructure landscape continues to expand.

Equipment buyers today are looking beyond acquisition costs and focusing on productivity, fuel efficiency and lifecycle value. Which innovations in LiuGong’s latest machine portfolio best address these evolving customer priorities?

Customers are increasingly looking at the complete economics of a machine rather than only its initial acquisition cost. Productivity, fuel or energy efficiency, reliability, maintenance requirements and overall lifecycle value are becoming important considerations. Our focus is therefore on equipment solutions that balance performance with operating efficiency and dependable utilisation. Electrification is also becoming increasingly relevant as customers and the industry look at more sustainable equipment options. Ultimately, the value of any innovation is determined by whether it helps customers improve productivity, manage operating costs and achieve reliable performance over the machine’s working life.

Digital technologies are reshaping fleet management and equipment maintenance. How is LiuGong integrating telematics, remote diagnostics and intelligent machine monitoring to improve customer productivity?

Digitalisation is changing how construction equipment can be monitored, maintained and managed. Connected equipment can provide greater visibility into machine utilisation, operating conditions and maintenance requirements, helping customers make more informed decisions. Telematics and remote diagnostics can also support earlier identification of potential issues and more efficient maintenance planning. From an industry perspective, the value of these technologies lies in improving uptime and making equipment management more predictable. Our focus is on understanding how digital capabilities can provide practical value to customers rather than adopting technology simply for its own sake.

The demand for specialised equipment is increasing across sectors such as mining, quarrying, road construction and material handling. How is LiuGong expanding its portfolio to meet the needs of these diverse applications?

India’s construction equipment market covers a wide range of applications, and each has different operating requirements. Mining and quarrying may demand durability and productivity, while road construction and material handling can require different combinations of versatility, efficiency and machine capability. Our approach is therefore centred on understanding the application before determining the equipment solution. A broad portfolio allows us to address diverse requirements while maintaining focus on reliability, operating economics and customer productivity. As applications evolve, the ability to provide equipment suited to specific working conditions will remain increasingly important.

What initiatives has LiuGong undertaken to strengthen its dealer network, spare parts availability and service response across India?

After-sales support is an important part of the overall equipment ownership experience. Customers need confidence that their machines will be supported throughout their working life, particularly when uptime directly affects project productivity. Our focus is on strengthening service capability, technical support and parts availability while improving responsiveness to customer requirements. Preventive maintenance and regular customer engagement are also important in reducing avoidable downtime. A strong aftermarket ecosystem ultimately helps customers achieve more predictable operating costs and machine performance, while building the long-term trust that is essential in the construction equipment industry.

With sustainability becoming an important consideration for equipment manufacturers, what measures is LiuGong taking to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions and support environmentally responsible construction practices?

Sustainability is becoming an increasingly important consideration alongside productivity and operating economics. The industry is moving towards greater fuel and energy efficiency, lower-emission technologies and alternative power solutions, with electrification becoming an important part of that transition. At LiuGong, we see the development of electric equipment as part of this broader movement. Our current showcase includes the 820TE, 906FE and LS1012H, representing electric solutions across different applications. The focus should remain on making sustainable equipment practical for customers while maintaining the reliability, productivity and value expected from construction machinery.

Looking ahead, what role do you see India playing in LiuGong’s global growth strategy, and which market trends are likely to shape your business over the next few years? India is an important market within LiuGong’s long-term growth strategy, supported by continued infrastructure development and the evolving requirements of the construction equipment industry. We see opportunities across roads, urbanisation, mining, industrial activity and other equipment-intensive applications. At the same time, localisation, technology adoption, electrification and greater focus on total cost of ownership will increasingly influence customer decisions. Our priorities are to strengthen our product portfolio, customer support and localisation while staying responsive to these market changes. The objective is to build sustainable growth by remaining closely aligned with India’s evolving equipment requirements.
